I wasn’t sure I’d revisit the STATION HELIX themes after TORUS, but I left a few plot threads open just in case. Curiosity won in the end, but I approached the new books differently. I knew from the start that I needed a new protagonist. Furthermore, I wanted a clear story arc rather than the unexpected one of the first series.
I decided that Cornishman Ryan Kerrek would fit the new lead role. Having discovered in my Cornish dictionary that kerrek means rocks (suitable for my new tough guy), I knew I had a good surname for my main character; as a palindrome it’s visually interesting as well.
Kerrek is a character who builds a wall around himself by choice; in SINISTER BETRAYAL he’s isolated because control is stolen from him and he has to fight to regain it. And logic doesn’t seem to work when his adversary is a vindictive sociopath with an unfathomable agenda.
Having the freedom to decide my own writing schedule meant I could set myself a challenge with the RYAN KERREK books, namely completing all four in the set before publishing them. This allowed me to solidify the foreshadowing and story arc, but it did mean waiting longer than usual to see my books in print.
Although the RYAN KERREK books are a set in their own right, they do refer to themes established in the STATION HELIX novels. Familiarity with the earlier books will provide a little more context, so I recommend reading them first. The series continues with DEADLY ACQUISITION.
