I wanted to write a novel for as long as I can remember, but that childhood ambition took many years to become a reality. STATION HELIX is the result. I found out about an intriguing Cold War site called Orford Ness and decided the remote spot on England’s Suffolk coast would be an interesting location for a thriller.
The main character Alex Hannay is named after John Buchan’s protagonist in his classic manhunt novel THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS. My great friend Jenny inspired the character of Abigail Jones and motivated me when I was struggling to work out the plot and multiple counterplots, hence the dedication.
Forcing a principled but naive protagonist into a situation which he is unprepared for is a compelling concept for a writer, particularly when the maze the character finds himself in is morally grey and dangerous. STATION HELIX explores how far powerful people will go to protect or steal a valuable secret.
Unsurprisingly, this book is special to me because it is my first novel. Working out the plot, writing and editing took around fourteen months. No author has any idea how his story will be received, so I’m grateful for the enthusiastic responses from readers. If you love the book, please write a positive review on Amazon.
STATION HELIX was originally intended to be a standalone book, but as I neared the end I realised I had subconsciously set up the plots for two more stories. Storytelling can be addictive, and I wanted to spend more time with these characters. The next book in the series is THE ELZEVIR COLLECTIVE.
